What is the Best Way to Find Your Voice?
Finding your voice as a voice over artist is easier than you may think. It's typically not something that is too much further from your own natural voice. There are some voice actors that have more of a natural tone while others have an unconventional sound. Either way in most cases that sound is very close to their normal speaking voice.
Things to consider:
- Although the script are not your words, they want it recorded IN YOUR WORDS.
- You were selected or you received the audition for a reason. Be confident.
- Don't force any contrived sound, essentially you are just adding energy and inflection.
Listen and Observe
You want to be a fly on the wall or what “old folks” used to say is “people watch.” Notice the difference in various types of emotion such as excited, happy, sad, worried, urgent, afraid, concern, etc. Listen to the way people speak and interact with one another, paying close attention to their voice and inflections. Break it down technically if you have to in order to hear how intent is naturally translated into speech. This is basically “conversational” speech. Mastering this is vital when doing voice over. We all know how to do it if we have ever had a conversation before. The challenge is doing it with words that are not your own.
Trust
No performance is more captivating than one that IS authentic. Being selected for the audition really boils down to two things. The sound of your equipment and how you deliver the read…the first time (or authenticity). That is the thing that will really set you apart from the pack of countless auditions. Anyone can a script words but it is your job to bring meaning, emotion and life to those words. Trust in yourself that you can deliver. You have got to be confident in your ability to get the job done. Surrender yourself to the to the needs of the script and don't over think it. You understand the assignment, now give the people what they want.
