Does Voice Over Actually Pay Well?
Let's be honest with ourselves. We know (or think) we have a great voice but the driving force behind becoming a voice over artist is the MONEY. So then the next question is; how much I make as a voice actor?
Well, it’s a tough question to answer! In the voice over industry, there’s no one-size-fits-all voice actor salary. Simply because there’s no one-price-fits-all for voice over projects. From our experience, each project is best calculated on a standalone basis; not random prices spontaneously attached to projects. These rates are determined using vital aspects of the industry — such as broadcasting rights, geographic location, and applicable voice over unions.
While that involves some research, one of the many perks of earning a voice actor salary is being able to support yourself (and your family) financially by doing something you really enjoy. As the saying goes: earn a living doing what you love doing, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. But ultimately, if you’re looking to start voice acting, you first need to establish how much money you’ll be able to make and if it will be a viable career to support yourself and your family.
Two additional details that influence how much voice actors make are speaking speed (pace) and script length, which directly impact the recording duration. This means the final rate earned is calculated based on the ratio of words used in conjunction with the recording length. In short, the average fee or voice actor salary varies from project to project.
ZipRecruiter provides a detailed breakdown of the average voice actor salary in the United States:
- $36.68 per hour
- $1,467 per week
- $6,358 per month
- $76,297 per year
Subsequently, it can be helpful to research the different components of pricing, then try to learn more about the different categories of voice overs and their respective rates. It can also be more helpful to focus specifically on the categories that you will be performing in. In addition, you can consult a relevant rate guide like the GVAA. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Before you start focusing on the amount of money you can make, focus on perfecting you skills. Good luck!
